Training Gaited Horses

Developing a Smooth, Relaxed Gait
Many gaited horses become rough or inconsistent when tension, imbalance, or confusion develops. At Legacy Ranch, training focuses on helping the horse relax, understand the rider, and move with a natural rhythm.
When the horse becomes calm and balanced, the gait becomes smoother and easier for both horse and rider.
Understanding Gait: Sight → Sound → Feel
At Legacy Ranch riders learn to recognize correct movement using a simple progression.
Sight - Riders first learn to recognize gait by watching the horse move from the ground. By observing the two legs closest to them, they can determine whether the horse is moving in a two-beat or four-beat pattern.
Sound - Next, riders learn to listen to the rhythm of the hooves. The sound of the gait helps confirm what the rider is seeing.
Feel - As riders develop their understanding, they learn to recognize the smooth and balanced feel of correct gait while riding.
This approach helps riders better understand their horses and maintain a consistent gait.
Relaxation Creates Smoothness
When the horse becomes calm and understands the rider, movement becomes more relaxed and balanced. This allows the horse to maintain its natural gait more easily and creates a smoother, more enjoyable ride.
Why Gait Becomes Rough
A rough or inconsistent gait is often not simply a gait problem. In many cases it is the result of:
• tension or rushing
• imbalance
• lack of understanding from the rider
• lack of collection
By addressing relaxation and communication first, the horse can begin to move more naturally and comfortably.

A Better Ride for Horse and Rider
The goal of gaited horse training at Legacy Ranch is not just to improve gait, but to develop a horse that is calm, balanced, and enjoyable to ride on the trail.

A Thoughtful, Consistent Approach
We use clear communication, timing, and consistency to help horses understand what’s being asked. When a horse understands, they can relax—and when they relax, they can learn.
Our focus is always on building a strong foundation first, so progress is solid, lasting, and safe for both horse and rider.
