Starting Young Horses

Most horses begin training between two and three years of age, depending on maturity and readiness.
Building the Right Foundation
Starting a young horse is about much more than the first ride. At Legacy Ranch, the focus is on developing a calm, confident foundation that prepares the horse for a lifetime of riding.
Young horses are introduced to training gradually, with an emphasis on relaxation, understanding, and clear communication.
Training the Mind First
Our approach focuses on helping the horse think instead of react. Horses that feel fear or discomfort often respond with instinct rather than understanding.
By creating an environment where the horse can relax and learn, the horse begins to understand the rider and respond thoughtfully instead of reacting out of tension.
When the horse’s mind is calm and engaged, the rest of the training becomes much easier.
Clear Communication
Training is based on consistent cues and the release of pressure when the correct response is offered. This allows the horse to quickly understand what is expected and builds confidence in the learning process.
As the horse gains understanding, it becomes more relaxed, responsive, and willing.
What Young Horses Learn
During training, young horses develop the foundation needed for future riding:
• Groundwork and basic communication
• Comfort with saddle and rider
• Calm, relaxed first rides
• Balance and control under saddle
Lateral and bending skills
• Early trail experience
Each horse progresses at its own pace, with the goal of developing a calm and confident riding partner.
A Foundation for the Future
A young horse that learns to relax, think, and understand the rider develops into a horse that is easier to ride and more enjoyable to own. The goal is to create a horse that is calm, confident, and ready to continue progressing in its training.

A Thoughtful, Consistent Approach
We use clear communication, timing, and consistency to help horses understand what’s being asked. When a horse understands, they can relax—and when they relax, they can learn.
Our focus is always on building a strong foundation first, so progress is solid, lasting, and safe for both horse and rider.
